EXPERT ADVICE

Even in Britain, it’s important that we look after our skin. Whilst we should be wearing sunscreen all year round, it’s especially important that we do so in the warmer months. To help you navigate the world of suncare, Boots Suncare Scientific Advisor, Clare O’connor is here with a handy guide.

UVA & UVB

‘UV light that hits our skin consists of UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays are able to penetrate deeper into the skin and can cause permanent damage. UVB rays are the most energetic rays and mainly penetrate into the top layers of the skin (the epidermis) and are usually responsible for the most immediate damage that we see and feel such as sunburn. This protection is measured by a star rating system, with five-star UVA rated products the highest level of protection available.’ Soltan Once Advanced 8hr Protect SPF50+ Spray, £10

CORRECT APPLICATION

‘Apply liberally and evenly 15 minutes before going into the sun to allow time to dry.

As a guide, the body needs a shot-glassful of product to totally cover the body. This equates to; a teaspoon for your head and neck and each arm, two teaspoons for front torso, two teaspoons for the back and two teaspoons for each leg. It’s a good idea to top it up immediately upon reaching your destination to avoid any missed spots and rub off from clothing or shoulder bags! Don’t forget that SPF is only half the story and we should also be choosing a product with high levels of UVA protection for the deeper down invisible damage.’ Soltan Face Protect & Moisturise SPF50+, £5.50

AFTER SUN HYDRATION

‘After sun products are designed to be incredibly moisturising, but this is not the only reason they can be more effective than a standard body moisturiser. Should your skin have been overexposed and be slightly sore or pink, the cooling effects of the after sun instantly help comfort the skin and cool and soothe the redness.’ Soltan Soothe & Cool Aftersun Gel with Aloe Vera, £4
