Getting a couple of Rich Tea biscuits out of the packet, they weren’t for dunking in my tea. As I had a very special furry friend waiting for their snack in anticipation.

‘Good morning, Rosy Posey,’ I’d sing out into the field.

And then, running alongside our four dogs, she appeared with her face aglow.

Giving Seacreed, our Collie cross, a boot up the bum, the dogs would all run around her, playing with one another.

However, there was something special about Rosy.

For she wasn’t a pooch – she was a playful little lamb.

And Rosy was determined to show that even though she’d had a difficult start, she wasn’t going to let anything stop her.

Even if she was one of the biggest rescues that me and my partner Jules, now 57, had ever taken in.

Setting up The Rescue Ranch, a sanctuary to help animals get back on their feet, nearly 30 years ago, we’d supported a number of vulnerable furry friends.

Starting out with two goats, Lilly and Phoebe, who were 46* going to be sent to slaughter, I’d bought a spot of land to keep them on.

Using all of my life savings, at just 20, it was a new adventure.

And as time went on, taking in neglected, unwell and injured animals was the norm.

From sheep, more goats, dogs and small animals, too.

Which caused the sanctuary to grow into the rescue location that it is today – still on that original patch of land.

At times, it was tough to see the animals in such distress. It broke my heart every single time.

However, the most rewarding feeling was sticking by them on the road to recovery.

Which was the case for Rosy Posey.

Spotted by a local horse rider in August 2023, she’d noticed an injured sheep unable to get up on the edge of a field.

With a very badly broken leg, that had fused back together, Rosy had been left untreated. She was in a desperate state. Rosy couldn’t walk, couldn’t stand and one of her eyes had even been pecked out by a crow – she’d been left for dead.

Only, we knew we would do everything in our power to be able to give Rosy a new lease of life at The Rescue Ranch. And that’s what we did. Getting mobility wheels, she was rolling around the grass.

Bumping into the dogs when they weren’t paying attention, she’d boot them up the bum to initiate play time.

Which is what she did in the last week of November 2023.

Munching on her Rich Tea biscuits and exercising on her wheels, Rosy was her usual self.

‘Are you a little bit chilly, Rosy?’ I asked, as it seemed like she wanted to go in early.

So, heading inside the barn she was there with her food bowl as I cracked on with other odd jobs around the house.

However, going in to check on her an hour or so later, our Rosy Posey had peacefully passed in her sleep.

I couldn’t quite believe it. In all honestly, both Jules and I went to pieces after that.

Rosy had touched our hearts in a way like no other animal.

Her mobility was getting better by the day, she’d even started to use two wheels rather than four.

We can’t even be sure why she died – it was a shock.

And since that moment, the dogs have picked up on our low mood, too.

Jules and I always try to remember the animals that we have lost over the years with plaques. Rosy was a little different. One of our friends who owns a sanctuary in Sussex kindly named a star in Rosy’s honour.

So now, whenever we look up to the sky, we can remember her for the happiness and love that she brought us.

Even if it was for a short period of time.

After her death, it’s made us realise how important it is for us to have bigger facilities.

We’d love to build a barn where our rescue animals can have enough room for physio.

However, we’ll remember Rosy Posy for the ewe-nique character that she was.

Showing that no matter what herd-ship you go through, positivity can get ewe through!
