Endometriosis and sex
If you suffer with endometriosis, it can significantly impact your sex life.
The pelvic pain associated with endometriosis can create physical and emotional challenges. This can include decreased libido, fear of pain during sex and strain on intimate relationships.
Dr Shazia Malik, a consultant OBGYN and UK Medical Director at leading gynaecological health company Daye, shares her top tips on navigating a healthy sex life with endometriosis.

1. Candid communication:
Discuss your concerns, fears and physical limitations with your partner.
Open communication can help build understanding, empathy and support.
Penetrative sex is just one of the many expressions of human sexuality – the right partner will not pressure you into any activities which you find uncomfortable and will approach the conversation with sympathy and understanding.
You can also engage in activities like sensual massage, cuddling and mutual masturbation, without exacerbating pain.
2. Pain management:
Prioritise effective pain management strategies before engaging in sexual activity with your partner.
This may include using heat therapy, taking pain medication as prescribed by your healthcare provider or exploring alternative therapies like pelvic floor physical therapy.
Other patients find relief with TENS machines and acupuncture. Daye’s Period Pain Clinic is designed to help you build a personalised pain management plan.
3. Use penis rings:
There are silicone penis rings available, which can limit penetration without having an impact on pleasure.
4. Use adequate lubrication:
To prevent painful sex, whether you have endometriosis or not, you should use a ph-balanced, clinically tested lubricant.
Re-apply to ensure you don’t suffer from pain caused by friction and dryness.
