Driver arrested in one incident after car crashed into several vehicles

- By TOM MORTON

POLICE are investigating after two separate dramatic crashes in Gosport in two nights.

One happened in Forton Road just after 11pm on Saturday. Police said that an Audi had hit several parked cars.

They added that a 24-year-old man from Blandford Forum in Dorset was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and aggravated vehicle taking.

A fire crew from Gosport also attended the collision and said the driver of the Audi was already receiving medical treatment for a head injury when they arrived and the matter had been passed into the hands of the police.

The arrested man was yesterday in police custody.

Meanwhile, a photographer whose car was caught up in a major crash in Gosport just over 24 hours earlier has spoken about his experience.

Simon Hill, a 63-year-old computer programmer from Cosham, was in Gosport on Friday night to plan a photoshoot.

While he was down by the bus station, just after 9pm, a blue Mercedes ploughed into his car in South Street, along with a silver Vauxhall and a nearby wall, causing tremendous damage.

According to police, nobody was seriously injured – but Simon has been left shocked by the incident.

Speaking on Saturday, he said: ‘I’m still quite shaken up by what happened.

‘I was down by the waterfront talking to another photographer when I heard this crash, which sounded like a low-flying plane, followed by a loud bang.

‘Someone came up to us and said there had been a nasty crash. I went over and saw my car had been crashed into and was now facing the other way and in the middle of the road.’

Photos taken at the scene show that Simon’s car, a blue Nissan Qashqai, has been crumpled on the front, back and sides.

He says the rear axle has also been seriously damaged.

‘I don’t know how they managed to damage three sides of the car like that,’ he said.

‘They must have been going at a tremendous speed to do something like this.’

Emergency services were called following the incident.

Reports from residents on social media claim to have seen a person running from the scene – though this has not been officially confirmed.

Anyone with information about the crashes can contact police on 101. The Forton Road reference is 44200256884 and the South Street reference is 44200255278.
