Pompey set to oppose EFL’s plans for wage cap

POMPEY are ready to voice their disapproval to the revolutionary EFL wage cap plans.

The Blues are vehemently against the proposals on the table to introduce a wage ceiling outside of the Premier League in their current guise.

And that is expected to lead to Mark Catlin forcefully making his point over its planned introduction next season.

The EFL are gauging support for the plans which are certain to change the face of the game moving forward.

A ceiling of £18m is proposed for the Championship with £2.5m in League One and £1.25m in League Two.

Pompey’s current playing budget far exceeds that total but a period of adjustment will be allowed which will allow clubs to take an average wage of their players already under contract, before falling within the cap’s parameters when new deals are signed.

Details are still to be ironed out over the proposals and the Blues are in support of tackling the issue of the sustainability of football clubs, which has been brought sharply into focus by the financial crisis created by the Covid-19 pandemic.

They take issue with a one-size-fits-all ceiling, however, and feel a club’s ceiling should be indexed to their turnover.

It's likely plans in their current guise will favour the smaller League One sides and hit the likes of Pompey, Ipswich and Sunderland hardest.

Kenny Jackett has previously spoken of his belief a wage cap will be introduced but voiced concern the plans could create yo-yo clubs between the Championship and League One with such disparate wage ceilings.
