Care home staff serve up super drive-thru coffee morning

SUPERHEROES delivered coffee and cake to people’s cars as part of a sociallydistanced drive-thru coffee morning.
Each year care home staff from Wellington Vale in Waterlooville host a Macmillan Coffee morning to raise money for the cancer charity and, despite the coronavirus pandemic and social distancing measures, the team were determined that this year’s event would not be missed.
Staff at the 80-bed care home in Darnel Road, put on masks and capes for a special drive-thru coffee morning and raised £500 by serving cups coffee and homemade cakes in the care home’s car park to members of the community.
General manager Sue Hill said: ‘It was a fantastic celebratory fundraising event, all within Covid-secure guidelines.
‘This year has been extremely challenging and the staff at Wellington Vale have been superheroes in the care and support they have provided to our residents, going above and beyond at all times.
‘We invite the local community into our home every year for a Macmillan Coffee Morning. Of course, due to the pandemic, this wasn’t possible this year, but we are delighted that over 50 cars came to our drive-thru coffee morning and that local residents helped us to raise vital funds for Macmillan in support of all the superheroes who are battling cancer.
‘Our residents, who were unable to attend the morning event for health and safety reasons, were treated to coffee and cakes in the afternoon, served by our superheroes. We all had a really fun day.’
The event was organised by home admissions advisor Helen Dunning and activities co-ordinator, Breda O’Doherty.
Helen added: ‘We are proud to be able to continue with our fundraising activity despite the current challenges and to have created an event which involves our local community.
