Take a gander at these

-

I have just read the article Plan to create a winter haven for geese ‘Is

Bonkers’ (September 25).

From what I have observed locally, there are numerous places in the area that the geese have found for themselves, to feed during the day and towards sunset, fly off to where they spend the night.

The site that Southsea Coastal Scheme, in their wisdom, have decided will be suitable for migrating Canada Geese, is part of the Castle Field, right in the middle of an area which is popular with families enjoying the sea air, playing games and exercising their dogs.

The geese haven’t settled there up till now, so obviously don’t fancy the location, but they will be encouraged to settle with decoy birds and mimicking audio devices!

These birds are wild. Will they want to be observed, even at a distance by dogs, inquisitive children and the general public? I don’t think so!

There are at least two specialised natural areas for them to flock to, Farlington Marshes and at Hill Head, the large bird sanctuary, Titchfield Haven National Nature Reserve, where the local Canada Geese go in their flocks each evening.

In today’s strange world with it’s own restrictions, the general public need space and freedom to recharge their batteries, not some half baked idea which will probably backfire because the birds find their own territory and there is no natural habitat in the Castle Field to attract them.

Where do I apply to be a Goose Warden after a crash course in Russian?

We need to direct the geese to the Castle Field or they get lost.

Perhaps I should merely put my head in my hands and weep at the sheer insanity of the idea.

For many years our goosey visitors seem to have been more than happy to settle on the out of season cricket ground between Canoe Lake and the Pitch and Putt .

I do not blame them.

Despite so many great times on Castle Field for me, the cricket pitch with its solid fencing and amazing views, seems a choice location for the geese. Well done to them.
