The answer to stopping Covid-19 is not locking away the old people
Letter of the day
In Tuesday’s edition of The News, Matt Mohan-Hickson appears to be blaming Boris for the rise in Covid-19 cases.
We need to look with ‘unblinkered eyes’ at what is actually going on. Boris or anyone in the government can’t police people who are and who have flouted the guidelines.
Those neighbours who continued to have barbecues and parties during the lockdown. The guy who was partially responsible for the lockdown in Bolton, by travelling abroad and coming home with Covid-19, and then going on a pub crawl and infecting many people.
Then there are those who don’t believe there is a virus and are encouraging us to remove our masks, not socially-distance and hug each other – one of those is David Ickes who once told Terry Wogan he was the son of God!
They are saying we are losing our freedom by these measures. Although the same people, no doubt, wear a seatbelt without hesitation.
He doesn’t want the young blamed, but largely it’s the older age group and the vulnerable that are suffering with social isolation, particularly those that are in care homes.
Boris, at the last briefing, refuted the suggestion about the young thinking that we should lock away the old and the
vulnerable so they could get on with their lives. Nevertheless, I heard a comment from a 90-year-old who said ‘they think we have had our lives’. Sadly, I think there are many who think like that.
I often think when people have so much to say on this deadly virus, how would they deal with it?
