A MAN was slashed in the neck after being jumped by an assailant who fled leaving his victim with a serious injury to the neck.

Police said the 26-year-old victim was in Gamble Road, Buckland, when he was attacked at around 9.10pm on Wednesday night. He fled to Derby Road, North End, and called for help.

The authority said the victim suffered a ‘laceration to the neck’ — while the assailant drove off following the attack, which is understood to have taken place close to the Aldi supermarket car park.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and is still in custody.

The victim is still in Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham undergoing treatment. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening, police said.

A Hampshire police spokesman said: ‘ We are seeking witnesses who may have dash-cam footage that may assist our enquiries after a 26-year-old man was seriously assaulted.

‘At around 9.10pm on Wednesday the victim, who had been walking along Gamble Road, was approached by a man who had gotten out of a blue vehicle.

‘The man assaulted the victim, leaving him with a laceration to his neck, and drove off.

‘The victim called for help when he got to Derby Road and remains at QA hospital for treatment. His injuries are not life threatening.’

Police were offering a visible presence in the busy area as they carried out patrols on Thursday.

Officers were also seen combing the area for evidence.

One local told The News: ‘We saw police searching the bushes on both sides of the road.’

Another said: ‘Police were looking for the offending weapon and asked if I’d seen or heard anything around the time it happened.

‘You wouldn’t know such an attack had taken place — there’s no blood on the ground.’

Others were shocked at hearing what happened. Buckland resident Frances Webb, 73, said: ‘It’s dreadful. Sometimes there are problems and then it just goes back to normal.

‘I don’t worry about things like that, though. I just think what an awful upside down world.’

Businesses in the area said they had been contacted by police for access to CCTV to see if they had captured the attack.
