New deals for Hants trio on back of first class debuts

-

Hampshire have awarded contract extensions to three youngsters who impressed in the truncated 2020 season.

At the start of this year, the chances of Scott Currie, Ajeet Dale and Tom Scriven - all pace bowlers - playing any first XI cricket were fairly slim.

But due to injuries and unavailabilities of a host of regulars, they were all handed their first class debut in the Bob Willis Trophy.

Dale, 20, played in the first and last games - at Hove and Canterbury - taking four wickets at 18.25.

Scriven, 21, made his debut against Surrey at Arundel and was recalled for the last game at Kent, where he top scored with 68 in the second innings.

He also took three wickets at 26.33.

Currie, 19, made his first class debut at Canterbury, where he was second top scorer in the first innings with 37. He also took three wickets at 19.33.

Currie also played in four T20 Blast matches and Scriven made one appearance in Hampshire’s dismal South group campaign.

All three have signed new contracts keeping them at the club until at least the end of 2021.

Giles White, Hampshire Director of Cricket, said: ‘Ajeet, Scott and Tom are three really exciting prospects and they’ve all shown their potential this summer. ’

The Southern Brave have retained Jofra Archer and Stefanie Taylor for the inaugural Hundred competition in 2021.

England pace bowler

Archer and West Indies captain Taylor had been due to play for the Ageas Bowl-based Brave in this summer’s tournament prior to the pandemic forcing its postponement.

England batsman Ollie Pope has left Brave, though, to sign for Cardiff-based Welsh Fire instead as no franchise can have two centrally contracted players.

London Spirit have selected Zak Crawley as their England centrally contracted pick ahead of Rory Burns, who is on his way to Oval Invincibles.
