Personal responsibility is the key to us all beating this pandemic
Everyone and their dog claims to have the answer to the spread of the coronavirus.
The Labour Party leader wants a full lockdown, the Lib Dem leader of Portsmouth City Council wants the same, the northern mayors don't. A group of ‘experts’ want a return to normal and let the virus run its course while shielding the vulnerable (they don't explain how). The Welsh want to close the border! But can someone explain to me how, if people will not obey a local lockdown and be sensible, why would they obey a national lockdown?
Various writers to this letters page think the government is ‘inept’ and the scientific advisors incompetent fools. Of course they have no knowledge of viruses or pandemics or how to deal with them but that never stopped a keyboard warrior.
And as night follows day the vulnerable will catch it and die. The numbers may be less than the first wave – the NHS is better able to cope and there are now treatments but the numbers are already worrying.
It is a sad fact that there are no ‘experts’ in dealing with a pandemic virus, only projections and best guesses based on limited experience and sketchy evidence. Anyone who thinks they have the definitive answer is deluded. If the best scientific brains in the world cannot agree, what hope do governments have of making the right decisions?
Until we all, young and old, accept responsibility for our own health and each others the virus will run riot and cause havoc.
Hands, Face, Space is not just a government slogan its common sense advice for our own good. Take it seriously.
