Jacobs aiming for top two after opening Blues goal account
SERIAL League One promotion winner Michael Jacobs surveyed Pompey’s squad and insisted: the quality of this group is as good as any I’ve gone up with.
The playmaker is adamant the Blues can be challenging for a top-two spot this season after putting Gillingham to the sword last night.
Jacobs bagged his maiden Pompey goal in the 2-0 victory at Priestfield following his arrival on a free transfer last month.
His signing was hailed as a coup by many given his proven quality at the level.
Jacobs already has three promotions under his belt from the third tier.
He twice went up with Wigan Athletic, in 2016 and 2018 respectively, while he was part of Kenny Jackett’s Wolves side that romped to the title with record points in 2014.
Pompey endured somewhat of a frustrating start to the campaign before the win at Gillingham.
But the 28-year-old is adamant Jackett’s troops possess the class to reach the Championship.
Jacobs told The News: ‘The squad is up there with those teams (he’s gone up with) given the quality of the boys that are here.
‘We had great teams in those seasons but, ultimately, it’s about putting four, five and six wins together. That then gives you the platform to get promoted.
‘There is quality in the squad and there is a number of players that are quality.
‘Everyone will play their part and hopefully we can try to get into that top two and stay there.
‘You get the same feeling (as at Wigan and Wolves). The size of the club is massive and it is a great opportunity for the club.
‘Like the gaffer said, we have a good squad. Ellis (Harrison) was out injured and him being out was a blow but John (Marquis) came in against Gillingham and was fantastic.
‘It’s important that whoever comes in can do a job for us.’
Jacobs’ 17th-minute strike was his first donning the star and crescent.
After moving to Pompey, he set himself a target of reaching double figures for goals and assists.
Having reached those heights before, he’s hopeful of doing so again.
The ex-Derby County man added: ‘I’ve done it before at this level so it is a matter of doing it again.
‘But, like I said, whoever contributes – as long as we end with the same result – is what we want.’
Last night’s result lifted Pompey up to eighth in the table ahead of Saturday’s trip to Sunderland.
