How Marine upset odds to make it to round two
Hawks’ FA Cup opponents Marine have already won through six rounds this season...
Preliminary qualifying round Marine 2 Barnoldswick 1
Marine were on the verge of tumbling out of the FA Cup at their first hurdle.
They trailed 1-0 against North West Counties League Premier club Barnoldswick - from the same level as the Wessex League Premier Division - before Ryan Wignall levelled in the 87th minute. Josh Hmami, pictured, then struck a 90th minute winner.
First qualifying round Frickley 0 Marine 1
David Raven grabbed the only goal on 72 minutes against a Frickley side from the same level of the pyramid - the Northern Premier League South East division - as Marine.
Second qualifying round Runcorn Linnets 1 Marine 1 (Marine won 4-3 on
penalties) Niall Cummins gave Marine the lead, with NPL North West rivals Runcorn levelling in the 90th minute from the penalty spot.
That took the tie straight to spot-kicks with Marine progressing 4-3 - Marine keeper Bayleigh Passant saving one effort and Runcorn firing another wide.
Third qualifying round Marine 4 Nantwich Town 1
Josh Hmami and defender Anthony Miley both struck twice as Marine caned one tier higher opposition.
Fourth qualifying round Chester 0 Marine 1
James Barrigan’s 81st minute penalty gave Marine an impressive victory at two divisions higher Chester - boss Neil Young’s former club.
First round proper Colchester United 1 Marine 1 (Marine won 5-3 on penalties)
For the second time this season, Marine won a shootout - this time against four divisions higher opposition.
The non-leaguers converted all their spot-kicks in the shoot-out with Josh Bohui firing the home side’s fourth effort wide of the post.
Anthony Miley had given Marine the lead on 21 minutes, with Harry Pell levelling for Colchester - 89 places ahead of their visitors in the pyramid - midway through the second period.
Victory took Marine through to the second round for only the second time. Back in 1992/93, they reached the third round proper before losing 3-1 at Crewe.
