From Magic Roundabout to Electric Brae – these are some of UK’s wackiest, steepest, smallest routes
Six of the wackiest and most interesting roads around the UK. They range from the steepest and shortest to the oldest and most complicated.
Motoring giant LeaseVan. co.uk has researched and revealed some of the strangest highways in Britain that could take drivers by surprise.
The Electric Brae in Ayrshire, Scotland is well known for its weird phenomenon that reportedly causes cars to roll uphill.
In 2019 Ffordd Pen Llech at Harlech in Wales was officially named the world’s steepest paved road with a gradient of almost 40 per cent.
The top six are ... 1 Electric Brae – Ayrshire
Cars are reportedly dragged uphill by a mysterious and invisible force, despite the handbrake on, ignition switched off and car stationary.
Some say it’s ghosts, others say it’s magnetic attraction, but it’s just an optical illusion! The Brae actually slopes downhill.
2 Magic Roundabout –
Swindon
This massive ring junction consists of five miniroundabouts arranged in a circle – and is probably the most confusing junction any British driver will ever have to tackle.
Unbelievably, there are hardly any accidents.
3 Fford Pen Llech – Harlech, Wales
Ffordd Pen Llech has a gradient of 37.45 per cent.
4 Ebenezer Place – Caith
ness, Scotland
It holds the record for the shortest street in the world. It was officially measured in 2006 at just 2.05 metres. It’s so short, there’s actually only one doorway on the road.
5 Hardknott Pass – Lake District
Hardknott Pass is a hill pass in the Lake District National Park, Cumbria, England. The tarmacsurfaced road shares the title of steepest road in England with Rosedale Chimney Bank in North Yorkshire. It has a maximum gradient of 33 per cent.
6 Ridgeway – Wiltshire to Berkshire
The Ridgeway is the UK’s oldest road, dating back more than 5,000 years and stretching from Wiltshire to Berkshire.
