Family-friendly films at community cinema

Muppets and Star Wars among festive treats

A COMMUNITY cinema at the Pyramids centre is to host a series of family-friendly films month, including It’s A Wonderful Life and a Jim Henson classic.

The Southsea Community Cinema will host a series of films in a 40-seat auditorium in the Glass House in the leisure centre on December 18, 19, and 20.

The season will kick off with a free screening of The Muppet Christmas Carol, starring Michael Caine and Kermit The Frog, at 5pm on Friday, December 18.

Seats should be booked in advance by emailing the Portsmouth Film Society – which runs the cinema – at info@ portsmouth­filmsociet­y.org.uk.

Aysegul Epengin, the developmen­t manager for the project, said: ‘It’s very, very important that people email us to book a place for the free screening.

‘And we hope the rest of our films put families in a Christmas mood.’

The 2020 adaption of Jane Austen’s Emma will come to the screen at 7pm on Friday, December 18.

The next day will feature It’s A Wonderful Life at 5pm, followed by Kristin Scott Thomas movie Military Wives at 7pm.

The season will finish with Star Wars blockbuste­r The Empire Strikes Back at 5pm on Sunday, December 20, with Christophe­r Nolan’s latest film, Tenet, showing afterwards at 7pm.

All tickets cost £6 for adults and children, and £4 for students and seniors.

The season comes as the cinema launch’s a children’s cinema club, which will host a weekly screening with a free drink for young people aged eight to 18 for an annual £20 charge, according to Aysegul.

She said: ‘We are hoping to start the club after December.

‘Families just need to email us if they are interested in attending.

‘We are hoping to do regular screenings on Saturday afternoons.’

Covid-19 safety measures will be in place across all screenings.
