What does it take?

-

continue to read in the court section in The News about people still drink-driving after more than 60 years that the law banning it, came into force. What does it take to get the message across?

In 1960, it became an offence to drive or be in charge of a motor vehicle on a road or other public places while, ‘unfit to drive through drink or drugs.’ No legal ‘drink-driving limit’ was set until 1967.

From where I got this information it says: ‘The drink driving laws and drug driving laws are constantly evolving, with various acts and statutory instruments being introduced, as the government continues to clamp down on driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs’.

There is a table for the magistrate or judge to work with in sentencing the idiots that commit this offence.

This needs to be scrapped. In my opinion, anyone found guilty of drink/ drug-driving, should automatically have their vehicle scrapped, a five-year ban, plus a heavy fine and a long prison sentence. This has been going one too long. From 1979 to 2016 a total of deaths was 24, 880. Then to serious injury: 132,510 and lesser injury: 514,520.

Then the other law which can and does save lives is the wearing of a seatbelt, but I won't go into that with more figures, and then there’s the good old Mobile phone, and doing your make-up while driving, and reading while driving – the madness just goes on and on.

There will be quite a few deaths from the Covid-19 virus this Christmas, let's not add to even more deaths by drink/drugdriving.

If you know of anyone doing this, for God's sake tell the police and maybe by doing this, you may save a life.

Wishing you all a happy and safe Christmas.
