‘I love to hear about the lives of every one of our residents’
Our 12 Days of Caring series, running up to Christmas Eve, is saluting the exceptional work of the care sector during a tough year in which staff have had to go the extra mile. reports.
AS A registered nurse Alison Lang decided to move into the care sector 20 years ago and has been at Cosham Court Nursing Home since 2013.
Alison, 56, said: ‘I qualified as a nurse in 1989 and spent time working as a nurse on the Channel Islands as well as at St Mary’s and Queen Alexandra hospitals providing acute care as part of intensive care units.
‘I decided to move into the private care sector and have really enjoyed looking after the elderly.’
As a qualified nurse, one of Alison’s key roles is to oversee and provide clinical advice for nurses working at the home as well as organising the admission of residents from hospital and general management of staff.
However it is the day to day contact with residents which still provides the most enjoyable aspect of the job for Alison.
She commented: ‘While we do have residents who may be with us temporarily what I really enjoy is the continuity of the care sector where you can really get to know people. Everyone has a story to tell and I love to hear about the lives of every one of our residents.’
While like many care homes this year’s Christmas activities are having to be tempered due to Covid regulations, Alison is still looking forward to having some festive fun with residents.
She added: ‘We have participated in the Carols for Care initiative and on Christmas Day we will be having a party and Father Christmas will be giving out presents. We also have a virtual pantomime being streamed into the home from the Kings Theatre.
‘My main new year’s wish is that my staff and residents get the vaccine and I am hopeful we can start to return to normal. We have been given preliminary information for the vaccine and hopefully it will be administered soon.’
