Improving prospects in a challenging jobs market

-

EARLIER this year BAE Systems announced that it was planning to recruit a record 800 apprentices across the UK in 2020 despite the Covid-19 pandemic.

As part of the drive to support the country’s economic recovery by getting people back to work and creating new jobs, especially for younger people, BAE Systems has now launched its apprenticeship scheme for 2021, announcing that it would be offering 1,200 roles across the UK.

A total of 85 of those roles will be based with the company’s Maritime Services business at Portsmouth Naval Base, Broad Oak and at Cowes on the Isle of Wight.

These apprenticeships cover craft skills, business administration, engineering, project management and procurement.

Maritime Services will also be offering 14 places for graduates from a range of disciplines.

Matt Gordon, BAE Systems Maritime Services Head of Early Careers and Skills, said: ‘These apprenticeships offer fantastic opportunities for young people to join a company where they will learn new skills, use stateof-the-art equipment and can progress to long-term, rewarding careers.’

To be considered for any of the company’s apprenticeships, you must be able to demonstrate your enthusiasm, thirst for knowledge and the desire to learn.

Apprenticeship schemes are not just for schoolleavers.

After working for 17 years as an engineer in the film and television sector, Sally Hesketh decided to retrain as a shipbuilder and went on to complete an apprenticeship at the International Boatbuilding Training College (IBTC) in the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard before joining BAE Systems.

Sally said: ‘What I love about working at BAE Systems is the support from the shop floor supervisors right up to any manager I’ve ever met.

‘The training is fantastic, it’s unlike anything I’ve ever had before and I found that an absolute joy.’

BAE Systems is acknowledged as one of the leading providers of apprenticeship training in the UK.

This year the company received the Department for Education’s National Apprenticeship Award (Macro Employer) and its delivery of training is rated by Ofsted as ‘Outstanding’.

The closing date for these schemes is February 28, 2021.
