‘I know that I am making a difference in someone’s life’

-

Our 12 Days of Caring series, running up to Christmas Eve, is saluting the exceptional work of the care sector during a tough year in which staff have had to go the extra mile. NEIL FATKIN reports.

CARE assistant Linda Otieno gets her job satisfaction from ‘seeing residents happy’.

Linda, 35, has worked as a care assistant for four years, the last one-and-a-half years of which have been at Oakland Grange Care Home in Southsea.

She said: ‘As a carer I deal with residents’ personal care such as helping to get them washed and dressed, helping to feed them or even just making them a cup of tea.

‘I enjoy seeing residents feeling comfortable and happy.’

As well as looking after their physical needs this can also include ‘having a chat or sitting down with residents to do a puzzle, jigsaw or listen to music’.

‘The residents love to have their hair styled, nails painted and they really enjoy Friday night bingo.

‘The best part about my job is going home knowing I am making a difference in someone’s life.’ added Linda.

After what has been a very difficult year for the care industry since the onset of the Covid pandemic, Linda is hopeful of a more positive new year with the launch of the vaccination programme.

She added: ‘I’m very hopeful for next year. The vaccine is really positive news and hopefully it will make it easier for residents to meet family members and to be able to get out on trips once again.’

Linda also praised the public for their support throughout the pandemic.

She commented: ‘Feedback from the public has always been very positive. My neighbours are always asking how I am and thank me for the work I am doing. I want to continue this role and to continue making a difference in people’s lives.’

After a tough year for the care industry, The News has joined a campaign to highlight the work that goes on in care homes. Today there is an online carol service for care homes that has been organised by Portsmouth Music Hub, and hampers are being sent out to care homes in a drive co-ordinated by Shaping Portsmouth.
