Pubs’ festive trade decimated

-

PUBS across the country face their worst Christmas on record, with trade down by more than 39 million pints this year.

The British Beer and Pub Association forecasts that just 2.6 million pints and 830,000 Christmas dinners will be served in pubs from today until Boxing Day.

These sales are a fraction of usual festive trade, which sees more than 40 million pints and six million Christmas dinners served in a normal year, according to the group.

Emma McClarkin, chief executive of the BBPA, said: ‘This Christmas will be the quietest year on record for our pubs.

‘The current restrictions were devastating enough but now with the introduction of tier four and a tightening of the rules over Christmas, consumer confidence will be hit further, leading to cancellations and greater financial woes for pubs and brewers

‘As the heart of the community year-round, but especially at Christmas time, it is such a shame our pubs will be so quiet or closed this Christmas.

‘The government has to recognise the damage that has been done, and do more to secure the future of pubs.’

Pubs have previously warned of a £650m decline in trade during December, which accounts for a quarter of annual profits.

The chairman of the Campaign for Real Ale, Nik Antona, said: ‘It is essential for the government to now step in to protect perfectly viable hospitality businesses that are struggling under unfair and unevidenced restrictions.’
