Road safety plea over ‘rat run’ by nursery
‘Potential child death’ concerns
TRAFFIC safety measures will be considered outside another Portsmouth nursery as fears were raised over a ‘potential child death.’
During a traffic and transport meeting at which speed reduction measures were approved for Victoria Road North, in Southsea, to protect the Rainbow Corner Day Nursery, calls were made to do the same for a ‘rat run’ junction in Drayton.
Conservative spokesman for traffic and Drayton and Farlington ward representative, Councillor Simon Bosher, asked for changes to be made to the Tregaron Avenue and Mansvid Avenue intersection – next to Dysart Nursery.
He said: ‘We have had four serious accidents there in the last calendar year. One at the beginning of the year when a teenage student on her way to college was the victim of two cars crashing.
‘She was pinned to a wall that collapsed and ended up in hospital for six months and is still suffering the effects.
‘As recently as Tuesday we had an elderly lady cut out of her car for the same type of accident.
‘We have a nursery on the junction. The accidents are actually happening here and it’s by the grace of god we haven't had a child death.
‘It’s a popular rat run that students, families and children use.
‘There goes a toddler on the front of a car if we are not careful. We are facing a potential child death.'
Traffic boss, Cllr Lynne Stagg, said: ‘I am sure we can find the money from somewhere, I totally agree with you. I wasn't even aware of that.’
Council officers agreed to look into road safety measures for the area.
