Eisner urges fans to be

-

MICHAEL EISNER has urged the Pompey family to remain united amid the ongoing challenges posed by coronavirus, writes NEIL ALLEN.

The Blues were top of League One at Christmas (only to be overhauled by Lincoln City on Boxing Day), yet are without another match in 2020 following an outbreak of the disease among their squad.

Meanwhile, like so many others, the club have struggled financially in a bleak climate, with football income streams devastated since the initial lockdown in March.

Still, Pompey will enter 2021 with hopes of finally earning a passageway to the Championship and the resumption of normality to society.

And their chairman has shared his optimism for the future in a festive message.

In a statement on portsmouthfc.co.uk, Eisner said: ‘With Pompey sitting top of the table on Christmas Day, I would, in normal circumstances, be writing to you all in a happy and buoyant frame of mind.

‘However, while football is a major part of our lives, unfortunately – as has been the case for most of the year – events outside of the sport continue to take centre stage.

‘As difficult as 2020 might have been, we have to try to remain positive and continue to support each other, as we have done throughout this terrible pandemic.

‘We remain in daily contact with Mark (Catlin, Blues’ chief executive), Kenny (Jackett, Pompey’s manager) and everyone at the club.

‘Despite not being in the UK, technology allows us to easily communicate with them.

‘I am sure that, one way or another, each and every one of you would have been affected by this dreadful virus.

‘My thoughts, love and wishes – and those of my family – are extended to you all.

‘I look forward to a time, hopefully soon, when we can once again travel to Portsmouth, and specifically Fratton Park, to share with you the passion we all hold for this amazing club.

‘Have as great a festive period as possible during these trying times – and please stay safe.

‘From my family to yours, we want to wish you all a very happy and merry yuletide, and a healthy and prosperous new year.

‘Finally, as always, Play up Pompey!’

Lincoln moved three points above Pompey courtesy of a resounding 5-1 victory at home to bottom-ofthe-table Burton Albion on Saturday.
