Out of this terrible year, we had something beautiful

- CHERYL GIBBS FROM GIRL ABOUT TOWN TO YUMMY MUMMY

Happy new year, guys! I really wish you all a happy new year, and I don’t think there was ever a more pertinent sentiment than that for this coming year. I mean, who wants a repeat of 2020? Although I fear we’re in for just a rough a ride and I truly do suspect that it will get harder before it gets better, I genuinely hope that 2021 is more joyful for us all.

I will forever look back at 2020 with joy in my heart because of course it was the year we had Harley and whilst having a baby during lockdown wasn’t the picture we had so patiently painted over the two and a half years it took to get her, I wouldn’t change the time we’ve had with her.

There are very few new families that get so much one-on-one time with their babies like we’ve had with her, so I really am thankful for that.

It’s just a shame that it came at the cost it did, and what a cost it has been. More than 70,000 people have lost their lives in the UK alone; that’s just a staggering number.

I recall the government saying back in spring last year that they had high hopes that the death toll wouldn’t exceed 20,000, and yet here we are, treble those figures and the whole situation is well, just awful.

Who would have thought, this time a year ago, when the coronavirus was barely featured in mainstream news what a year we’d have?

And I think that was half the trouble for us really – we just weren’t prepared for the toll it would take and the effects it would have on every single person on the planet.

How mind blowing is that?

I’m sad that the year our daughter was born is the year that will go down in modern history as one of the worst ever, but for us it was the year that changed our lives – and for the better.

I count myself very lucky to be able to say that – there are over 70,000 families and friends in the UK alone who can’t, and I just pray that the numbers don’t keep rising.

With the tier rules changing on what seems like a daily basis, all I can say to you is I hope, I pray that 2021 is a safe one for us all.
