Posh boss’ emphatic response to circuit breaker and season not reaching finish

-

Peterborough owner Darragh MacAnthony is adamant the football season will be seen to a conclusion.

And the Irishman also dismissed the notion of a circuit breaker to manage the intensifying spread of coronavirus through football.

MacAnthony has once again brought his forthright views to the conversation over the path forward for football and EFL clubs through the latest chapter of the Covid-19 pandemic.

And he is insistent that there’s no way there will be either a repeat of last season’s curtailment or cancellation of the 2020-21 campaign.

Peterborough have been hit by their own coronavirus outbreak which has seen them postpone fixtures over the Christmas period.

MacAnthony explained the

Posh would likely have ploughed on with the games if the situation had arisen at a different time of year.

And he feels that is the kind of attitude which now needs to be taken to ensure football continues and fits into the current calendar.

MacAnthony said: ‘If it hadn’t been for Christmas and the fact a lot of players were seeing families we’d probably have not made that decision.

‘The EFL medic said it was the right decision at the right time.

‘If it was January or February we probably isolate the people who were infected and try to play the games with the ones who weren’t.

‘We’d know they’re not going home for Christmas Day or spending time with older members of their family.

‘Now we’re past Christmas and heading into January that’s what I think we ‘ve got to do as football clubs.

‘There’s no way the season won’t finish.

‘I know that happened last season and it blew up in my face because I didn’t want to see it finish.

‘But I can’t see that happening this time and I can’t see them having a break either with the Euros and so many games to play.

‘I’m not sure how Premier League clubs would be able to finish the season if they have a two-week break.

‘So that idea which has been suggested - I don’t think it’s the right course of action.’
