Better make mine a double, I want to get lost in music

- MATT MOHAN-HICKSON The Millennial View

Here we go again. Third verse the same as the first. Lockdown round three. I mean I can’t say I ever really unlocked, so not much has really changed in a way. But I’m sure that is probably the same for the majority of you reading this right now.

And if I am being honest, given the current weather and threat of a new ‘Beast from the East’, I can’t say I would have been going out much in normal times.

Instead I am wrapped up warm and finally finding the pleasure of getting lost in a long double-album.

Generally when I listen to music I find a song to love for a day or two, playing it on repeat endlessly until I hate it, or I am extremely twitchy.

Jumping from track to track like a madman, barely letting the first few seconds pass before moving on again.

My listening habits have often resulted in me being dismissive when it comes to the idea of firing up a long playlist or pressing play on an album with more than 10 songs.

Yet last week something changed. Perhaps it is the being in lockdown again and not having to be anywhere else or have anything to do, but when I saw the new 30-track LP from Morgan Wallen on Spotify I decided to really give it a proper listen.

In the past I probably would have jumped to the singles or found a track early on to repeat over and over, but this time I played it straight and let the album run its natural course.

And what a revelation it was, I suddenly felt like I had fallen down a rabbit hole and had been transported to some smoky bar in small town America – instead of stuck at work.

I began to really appreciate the crafting of the track list – including a dazzling run of eight songs which find interesting new twists on the old clichéd break-up track.

In the past just seeing the list of 30 tracks would have been enough to make me run for the hills.

But now I am a convert to the doublealbum and I’ve got a hankering for more, so feel free to drop me suggestions via my email Matt.Mohan-Hickson@JPIMedia. co.uk.
