Jackett’s changed his philosophy overnight

GAFFER FOR A DAY

Karl Myers, aged 28 from Evesham, gives his verdict on Pompey’s 1-0 win at Fleetwood...

What are your thoughts on Pompey’s win?

It was not our best performance, but we were solid and stood our ground extremely well.

Fleetwood were decent going forward and we didn’t have a lot of the ball, so we had to dig in and win ugly.

Let’s face it, we can’t always play free-flowing football. To earn promotion there are times when you must grind out the results.

Having said that,

Fleetwood didn’t create a lot apart from Criag MacGillivray’s superb firsthalf save and one which went past the post.

Overall, we looked fairly comfortable defensively.

What do you make of Pompey’s turnaround since October?

It has been quite a transformation, we have completely changed our style of play – and it is much better to watch.

Kenny Jackett deserves praise. I was one of those calling for his sacking. I certainly wouldn’t sack him at the moment.

We pass the ball around, although do tend to try to play it out from the back a bit too much. However, before it was always long ball. We’d score a goal and sit back. Jackett changed his philosophy overnight.

Who was your man of the match?

I thought Andy Cannon had a great game, just edging John Marquis as my choice.

He gets stuck in, is consistent, and has that tremendous work-rate which means he always seems to be everywhere around the pitch.

Last season, when Jackett used his old system, he looked out of place, it was difficult to see where he fitted in. Tom Naylor alongside suits him very well and, as long as both stay fit, I believe they can get us promoted.

What would you like to see Pompey do in the transfer window?

We need left-back cover, although Lee Brown has improved a lot this season.

It would also be nice to get another central midfielder. Ben Close has not had a lot of games and I’m concerned who could step in should Naylor or Cannon get injured.

With Jordy Hiwula also staying, I don’t think we need too much. We are pretty strong, the team is really good at the moment.
