Community radio will shine on in lockdown

-

REGULAR listeners to a community radio station have thanked presenters for keeping them company during lockdown.

For many people, Shine Radio in Petersfield has provided a friendly voice over the airwaves during the coronavirus pandemic.

One such person is listener Anne Saunders, who says the station has never failed to lift her spirits.

She said: ‘It does put a smile on your face. the banter between the presenters in the morning – having a giggle between them.’

Presenter Joff Lacey says it’s an honour to provide such a community service.

He said: ‘Lockdown is tough for us all, but local radio is here to give companionship, comfort and a connection to the community.

‘Our volunteers are thrilled to be able to provide a radio lifeline to so many people at a time of isolation.’

In January, on-demand listening figures hit 5,300, a record for the station.

I totally agree that all frontline workers should get priority when it comes to using surplus Covid vaccinations. These are people who come physically into direct contact with people and also in quiet close and sometimes aggressive situations.

Everyday they put their‘s and their families lives on the line, as shown with the two local police constables who died recently from Covid. Unfortunately the Prison Service is a forgotten public service, that has great challenges both with keeping staff and inmates safe in these trying times, and should also be included in the list of frontline workers.

Anything that can be done to get these frontline workers vaccinated should be encouraged and promoted and a big thank you to all these people who do such valued jobs, and every day put themselves at risk for us.
