Not enough clear-cut chances – full-back

-

CHARLIE DANIELS rued Pompey’s lack of goal threat as they slumped further away from the automatic promotion frame.

Both sides struggled to create in a tight encounter at home to Blackpool on Saturday, contributing to a lacklustre and highly forgettable match.

However, Jerry Yates snatched a 1-0 victory for the Tangerines eight minutes from time.

It represents successive defeats for Kenny Jackett’s men, who now find themselves fifth in League One – ominously seven points adrift of the top two.

And Daniels admitted the Blues didn’t conjure up enough goal-scoring opportunities.

The left-back told

‘It was a tight game, both teams underplayed.

‘It was a bit stop-start and we had a couple of good chances, especially Rasmus (Nicolaisen) in the first half.

‘If we take that then I think it’s a different game.

‘We had more possession, probably more chances, but apart from Rasmus not really clear-cut. The same with them.

‘Both teams, of course, would say they’d like to win.

‘It was a bit of a sucker punch for us. Rasmus has got sucked in, to be fair the striker (Yates) has done well, and it went into the far corner.

‘We were defending well, especially after Tuesday (when Pompey lost 3-1 away to Bristol Rovers).

‘We went into the game knowing our defending had to be a lot better than that – and I think it showed.

‘It was their second shot on target maybe. And it went in.’

MASON MOUNT’S Pompey roots have been well documented during his rise to Chelsea and England stardom.

The midfielder netted for the second time in his career against Pompey’s southcoast rivals Southampton on Saturday.

And the former Purbrook Park Pupil savoured scoring at St Mary’s once again, even if the game ended 1-1.

Mount told Chelsea’s website: ‘I’ve said before that it does mean a little bit more to me (to score against Southampton) and I scored here last season as well so it’s a nice ground for me to play at but the most important thing is to get the three points and we didn’t manage to do that so it’s obviously a disappointment.’
