Handmade dream catchers prove real success in lockdown
Mum’s creations prove a big hit
UNABLE to go to the gym or socialise with friends, single mum Jayne Terry decided to do something to take away the lockdown boredom.
She set up her own business called Dreams ‘n’ Oceans by JT – selling handmade dream catchers – and she’s been amazed to see her idea take off as people snap up her beautiful creations.
Jayne, from Gosport, said she noticed at the start of the first lockdown that more people were being creative and mindful and this inspired her to start making dream catchers.
The 52-year-old said: ‘I started creating dream catchers when everyone began to put things up in their windows dedicated to the NHS, so I began putting dream catchers in my windows and garden.
‘Then all of a sudden quite a few people began asking me to make things for them as well as people on Facebook showing an interest.
‘It’s snowballed from there.’
With all of Jayne’s family living in Spain and her eldest son, Jake, 22, studying at Brighton University and being unable to come home due to Covid restrictions, Jayne found herself at home with only with her youngest son, Flynn, 15, for company.
She said: ‘I love nature, so I always make time to go down to the beach and collect driftwood, with the help of my German Shepherd.
‘I enjoyed doing something for myself. I had never made anything before. I just learnt through watching YouTube videos and discovered from there that I was good at being creative.
‘It creates a whole new sense of fulfilment, especially because people are really impressed with my products they receive.’
The business has also expanded and now sells more than just the dream catchers, which take roughly an hour and a half to make and cost from £6 up to £26.
She is now making a variety of other things, using environmentally friendly, recyclable materials, such as tea light holders and trees of life.
She said: ‘I’m a wannabe hippy chick who loves making spiritual, crafty and funky items. Everything is unique and made with love and positivity.’ Jayne has worked within adult health and social care at Hampshire County Council for 21 years, specialising in helping people with sensory loss.
She is running her new business as a part-time side hustle.
Although she says she’s loving every second of her new venture.
She said: ‘Making all the products for my new venture really helps me to de-stress and wind down from a hectic but fulfilling job.
‘Dreams “n” Oceans by JT has been born and my dreams have come true to run a business.
‘I get to keep busy, be mindful, share my artistic passion and bring some brightness and love to people’s lives through my creativity.’
