SOS to ex-Blues man and Notts County skipper Doyle

-

POMPEY sent out an SOS to former skipper Michael Doyle.

The News understands the 39-year-old was sounded out over potentially assisting the Blues during this interim period.

The suggestion involved working in a touchline capacity, utilising his ability to motivate players and maintain high standards which he emphatically demonstrated as a Pompey favourite.

Doyle remains highly regarded at Fratton Park, while himself has made no secret of his deep affection for the club he led out of League Two in 2017.

The combative midfielder is also keen on entering coaching and management when he finally hangs up his boots.

However, Doyle is still under a contract at Notts County until the end of the season – and desperately keen to help them regain their Football League status.

On Tuesday night he scored for the Magpies in their 2-2 draw at Boreham

Wood, which keeps them seventh in the National League.

It is understood the call went out to the former Coventry City player earlier this week.

Yet the sticking point remains his current commitments to the Meadow Lane club, which he intends to honour.

Hours after Kenny Jackett’s departure on Sunday, League Two title winner Carl Baker quipped he was ready to step in as mananger for the rest of the season – with Doyle as his assistant.

Baker, who scored nine goals in 47 games when the Blues claimed the fourthtier crown in 2017, joked he was willing to step up to the plate, along side his former skipper, to help rescue the club’s season.

He tweeted: ‘Bakes and Doyler for Pompey job till the end of the season.’

In the meantime, Pompey are closing in on appointing ex-Lincoln and Huddersfield boss Danny Cowley as Jackett’s replacement.
