Taking a trip down memory lane ... and celebrating sport
It was a year to remember for Hampshire Cricket.
And the county’s achievements in 2005 were duly recognised when The News held their annual sports award celebration evening the following February.
As a result of ending a 14-year trophy drought by winning the C & G Trophy final at Lord’s, as well as finishing runners-up in the County Championship, Hampshire collected the Team of the Year award.
Shane Warne won the Sportsman of the Year trophy after a 2005 season when he starred for county as well as country.
In 11 Championship games he bagged 47 wickets to help the county to only their third runners-up spot since they last won the competition in 1973.
In their first season back in the top flight, Hampshire finished just two and a half points adrift of champions Nottinghamshire with both counties having won nine of their 16 games.
Warne also bagged a stunning 40 wickets in just five Tests as Australia relinquished the Ashes, having held them for 16 years, in one of the most memorable series of all time. The legendary legspinner took 14 more wickets than anyone else in the series.
Rower Graham Benton was runner-up to Warne after winning the Men’s Open event at the British Indoor Rowing Championships in 2005.
He had become the first ‘non-rower’ to win the title 12 months earlier - the event had previously been dominated by Olympic water rowers, while

With Warne on Ashes duty, it was left to Shaun Udal to captain Hampshire to Lord’s final victory over Warwickshire.
After taking 44 Championship wickets, Udal was rewarded with an international call-up and made his England Test debut in November 2005 against Pakistan.
