Marquis shocked to be sent off for ‘good tackle’

-

JOHN MARQUIS believes there’s grounds for appeal over his Shrewsbury red card.

The striker admitted he was ‘shocked’ by referee Benjamin Speedie’s decision to send him off in Pompey’s 2-1 win at Shrewsbury on Saturday.

Marquis got his marching orders with 21 minutes of the League One match remaining for a challenge on Harry Chapman, after scoring in the first half on his injury return.

Replays appear to show the 28-year-old won the ball, but the referee deemed the tackle dangerous.

It’s a decision Pompey disagree with and head coach Danny Cowley has confirmed they will now appeal the red card, with the fear Marquis could be banned for three games.

Marquis said: ‘To be honest, I felt straightaway it was a good tackle.

‘I’ve gone in one-footed, not high off the ground and I’ve won the ball.

‘People tackle all the time in the game and there’s different ways to tackle.

‘Just because you go to ground doesn’t me it was a red card. I was shocked by it, to be honest.

‘We’ll look back on it and see if there’s an appeal in there. I think there is.’

Unless Pompey’s appeal is successful, Marquis will miss the matches against

Rochdale (Good Friday), Wigan (Easter Monday) and Burton (April 10).

■ Pompey won’t be successful if they choose to appeal John Marquis’ red card.

That’s the opinion of pundit Sam Parkins, speaking on highlights programme EFL on Quest on Saturday night.

However, Parkin can’t see that happening – despite thinking Marquis shouldn’t have been dismissed in the 2-1 win over Shrewsbury.

‘I can understand why the referee has given it,’ said Parkin.

‘But, for me, it is yellow card at worst.

‘Again, it was split opinion and it’s very much a modernday sending off.

‘Danny Cowley is right to appeal it but he won’t be successful – that’s where we are.’
