New bosses like to keep it simple – Marquis

-

JOHN MARQUIS revealed the messages which are breathing new confidence into Pompey’s season.

And the striker has given an insight into the training ground messages from the Cowleys which are rejuvenating the Blues’ players.

Danny Cowley and his brother, Nicky, oversaw a 2-1 success over Shrewsbury on Saturday to make it back-toback wins and see their team climb back into the League One play-off places.

The win at New Meadow arrived after the new managerial duo’s first full week of training, where they’ve made their mark on the players.

Marquis believes the quality of their work and looking at what suits individual players has been a hallmark of their time in charge to date.

He said: ‘For everyone, we’re getting really good quality training into us.

‘We can look at what suits each player and what their strengths are.

‘We just need to play to our strengths and the manager says they just want to make football as simple as possible.

‘Sometimes it is just playing a five-yard pass, playing it back or waiting for the picture to change rather than just playing it forward quicker and me possibly winning it or possibly not winning it.’

The Cowleys now have more time to get their message across ahead of Friday’s meeting with Rochdale at Fratton Park.

Marquis added: ‘We’ve now got a free week where we can put the hours in on the training pitch and work at a few things.

‘You can see the progress we’re making and there’s a lot of factors, but you can see from last week after one day working with us and then from the first 45 minutes against Shrewsbury after a full week.’
