Blues goal hero tells of struggles with injuries

ANDY CANNON is prepared to continue battling through the pain barrier in Pompey’s quest for the Championship.

The fans’ favourite revealed he’s been suffering with back and hamstring issues that have recently kept him out of the starting line-up.

Cannon’s been a regular for the majority of the season and ranks among the best performers in the squad.

But he’s found himself on the bench in the past three games, with Ben Close instead partnering Tom Naylor in central midfield.

However, Cannon made a match-winning impact in yesterday’s 1-0 win at Wigan.

After coming on at halftime, it took him just 36 seconds to smash home a long-range effort to make it four victories on the spin for the Blues.

Cannon said: ‘Closey has come in and has done magnificently. He’s a very good player, a very technical player.

‘Nobody would really know this but I’ve had a problem with my back and lower hamstring.

‘I’ve spoken to the manager about it regarding the process of keeping fit and being available for team selection.

‘I’m trying to get through it in any way to help the team. Luckily I’ve come on and helped the team.

‘I think it’s happened because of the schedule of the games. I’ve played a lot of games and it might be catching up a little bit.

‘I’ve not started the past three games but it’s kind of helped me in a way.

‘I’m feeling a lot better, a lot more refreshed because playing game after game was taking its toll.

‘I’ve spoken to the gaffer and the physios and told them everything about it.

‘It’s all good, I’m feeling a little bit better.’
