Ash bang wallop Carberry hit goal trail

- - SIMON CARTER

Ash Wheatley and Ash Sills both struck twice as Carberry warmed up for this weekend’s Mid-Solent League Division 2 top two clash against East Lodge with a 6-1 battering of Segensworth.

Gary Armstrong and Dave Clarke (penalty) were also on target, with four of the goals coming in the second half.

Carberry boss Dave Bridger is now hoping for a better result than their 5-1 beating by Lodge in December.

‘That was the last game before lockdown,’ he recalled. ‘We were quite happy to stop at that point because we were falling apart.

‘We had a couple out with coronavirus, we signed a few on on the day, one player’s boots fell apart early on, and we only had about eight fit players in the second half due to a couple of injuries!

‘It will be nice to have a full squad to choose from this time.’

■ Cowplain and Rowner Rovers combined to produce their second see-saw encounter of the 2020/21 Mid-Solent League season.

When the sides met before lockdown, Rowner let slip a 6-2 lead to lose 7-6 - their third straight loss to Cowplain.

At the weekend they came from behind to lead 2-1, trailed again 3-2, before bagging the 19th goal in the two games between the two Division 2 teams this term.

After Cowplain led at the interval, Rowner hit back through Nick Scanlon and John Forestall.

Back came Cowplain, though, before Ollie Urry had the final say to give Rowner a point at Ravens Close.

‘It was a fair result,’ said Rowner boss James Dedman. ‘We did have two goals disallowed, though - one was definitely not offside.’
