9). I have been successful­ly following this diet for a couple of months now having piled on 20lb in 2019 due to severe back pain and sciatica which prevented me from exercising and led to a high degree of comfort eating and drinking.

During 2020, I tried a previously successful regime, namely dry periods with no wine or beer and, despite a dry-ish December 2020 and a very dry January 2021, I only managed to shift 7lb leaving a legacy of 13lb.

I then read about keto in a Saturday paper supplement and decided to give it a go. I set myself the ambitious target of shedding 20lb and achieved that this week.

As Cheryl writes, the idea is to drasticall­y reduce dependence on carbohydra­tes to fuel the body and convert to deriving energy from fats. The philosophy is that this is a more natural state and the benefits, evidently, are that weight loss is achieved without muscle depletion while the fat burning process brings additional health benefits by reducing unseen fat deposits that build around the major organs.

I have also been following keto posts on Facebook and one of the most regular complaints (usually from Americans) is that the meal sizes are too small. Anyone who has been to the USA will know that that portion sizes in the US are somewhat challengin­g.

I noticed, over time, a box of my favourite chocolate balls go from 140g to 120g to 110g to100gr to 90g!
