Ex-Pompey ace Moore

-

FORMER Pompey defender Darren Moore has contracted pneumonia and blood clots after testing positive for Covid-19.

The Sheffield Wednesday boss had returned to work on Monday after spending 10 days in isolation.

He took charge of the Owls’ 2-0 defeat at home to promotion-chasing Swansea in the Championship on Tuesday.

However, Moore – who left Pompey’s League One rivals Doncaster for Hillsborough last month – has felt discomfort since the game and will be forced to take further leave of absence.

He told Wednesday’s website: ‘I have developed pneumonia as a result of Covid-19, with blood clots on the lungs and extreme discomfort.

‘I am gutted to be away but I understand the situation and the course of action I must take.’

The Owls currently languish second-bottom in the Championship and are eight points adrift of safety with just five matches to play.

The first of them is at

home to mid-table Bristol City this lunchtime.

Pompey have sent their best wishes to Moore, who scored two goals in 66 appearances at Fratton Park between 1999 and 2001.

A tweet from the Blues’ account said: ‘Everybody at #Pompey wishes Darren Moore a full and speedy recovery. Get well soon, Darren.’

■ Harry Kavanagh has announced his Pompey departure.

The homegrown defender revealed his 13 years at the club have come to an end.

Kavanagh, from Cowplain, skippered the academy last season which earned him third-year scholarship terms at his boyhood club.

The right-back, a former North Stand season-ticket holder, featured twice for Pompey in the Papa John’s Trophy this season, against West Ham under-21s and Peterborough.

He also had a spell on loan at Gosport Borough but that was halted because of the coronavirus crisis which ground non-elite sport to a halt.

And coming towards the end of his contract, Kavanagh’s been told he will not be handed fresh terms at PO4.

Kavanagh wrote on Twitter: ‘Extremely mixed emotions but my 13 years at this club has come to an end.

‘Something I didn’t expect to happen but every ending is a new beginning.

‘I leave with no regrets knowing I worked as hard as I could and wore the badge with so much pride everyday. Onto the next adventure.’
