Help for veterans

-

With Emily Turner's excellent article on ex-Royal Marine ‘Ian’ Campbell (Veteran finally gets send-off he deserves, August 18), and the ensuing editorial comment in today's The News, it seems timely to mention the ongoing assistance on offer to Armed Forces' veterans in our city.

Yesterday, I went sailing around the Solent with a group of military veterans.

This was organised through the Veterans Outreach Support (VOS) who are based in the Royal Maritime Club in Portsea.

They hired the services of the RoRo Sailing Project (moored in Port Solent Marina) who specialise in providing real sailing for people with all types of disability.

What a superb organisation the RoRo Project is too!

Captained by John with first mate Geoff and the cabin boy (my apologies if that's not his real title) Theo, we had a splendid day on the water along the length of the Isle of Wight and back a few times.

The vets enjoyed this immensely; they all agreed that getting out in the fresh air and doing something so different was of great benefit to all. VOS have scheduled further trips for the near future.

With what looks like some return of normality post-Covid, VOS are planning to reinstate their monthly drop-ins in October. T

hese provide numerous forms of assistance for veterans on a regular basis even if it's just the opportunity to share a cuppa and have a chat with like-minded people. You can find out more about VOS on vosuk.org and RoRo on disabledsailing.org and I highly recommend both!
