Boss Gale lifts lid on half-time tactical tweak

-

Shaun Gale lifted the lid on the slight half-time tactical tweak he felt provided the key to Gosport Borough's victory over Southern League Premier South bottom-side Wimborne Town.

Strikes late in the secondhalf from defender Ryan Woodford and Luke Hallett helped Boro secure a 2-0 triumph over the struggling Magpies at Privett Park.

But Gosport had served up a lacklustre first-half showing, with boss Gale employing both Matt Paterson and Dan Wooden up front in a slight tactical change.

However with both Bradley Tarbuck and Mike Carter introduced at the break, Gale reverted back to his familiar 4-2-3-1 system as Paterson and the injured Billie Busari made way and Wooden led the line alone.

The Boro boss held his hands up and felt his tactical switch did not work in the first 45 minutes, but he was full of praise for his players as they battled to claim victory.

Gale said: ‘I thought second-half, the shape - even though it was a little tweak, even though we had one up top - it was three up top at times.

‘I'm pleased for the lads because I was frustrated and they were frustrated at half-time.

‘There was no point shouting and balling about it, we had to play better, we had to do better and they knew that.

‘We didn't play with any intent or tempo first-half maybe because of the wind or because of the shape - but second-half I thought we played with a purpose, a lot more pace and we created a lot more opportunities and we got the two goals.’

Former Pompey winger Ricky Holmes struck twice as Farnborough stretched their lead at the top of the Southern League Premier South last night.

Holmes netted in each half as Boro won 2-1 at Harrow Borough to move six points clear of the Met Police.

Gosport’s next game is away to Tiverton this Saturday, before they welcome Dorchester Town to Privett Park on Saturday, December 11.
