Three-point gaptotop six following Pilgrims win

-

DESPITE the latest surge in coronavirus cases causing matches to be postponed across the country, six games in League One still took place on Saturday.

Pompey were one of many clubs in English football’s top four divisions to endure a fixture cancellation, with the Blues’ trip to AFC Wimbledon moved to a later date.

But with teams around them in the table in action, the picture changed slightly at the weekend.

The gap between Danny Cowley’s side and the top six has been extended to three points after Plymouth secured their first victory under Steve Schumacher to go fifth in the standings.

The Pilgrims edged past

Charlton 1-0 at Home Park in Johnnie Jackson’s first match as permanent Addicks boss. Kieran Agard netted his first Plymouth goal.

Oxford United dropped below Plymouth to sixth after conceding a late goal to lose 3-2 at home to second-placed

Wigan.

Will Keane and Max Power handed the Latics a 2-0 lead in the first 32 minutes, but former Pompey man Ryan Williams immediately pulled one back and Matty Taylor levelled just before the hour.

Leam Richardson’s side snatched all three points in the 86th minute thanks to James McClean’s strike.

Elsewhere, Ipswich drew 1-1 at home to Sunderland with their new head coach, Kieran McCenna, watching in the stands.

Forgotten man James Norwood bagged his second goal in as many games to put Ipswich ahead on the cusp of half time only for Nathan Broadhead to equalise five minutes after the restart.

Other results: Cambridge United 0-1

Rotherham United, Shrewsbury Town 3-1 Cheltenham Town, Morecambe 0-0 Fleetwood Town.
