How to stay alert to scammers

- By Rhiannon Parnell

Online scams are everywhere – in your emails, on webpages, and they can be really difficult to spot. It is so important to be scam aware – especially as there is currently a nation-wide cost of living crisis that scammers will try to take advantage of.

A scam is a scheme that aims to steal money, personal information, or data from a person, often using the promise of something in return, or for a specific reason. Some of the most common include: A charity scam, by which a scammer pretends to be a charity to gain a ‘donation’ from you and debt related scams, by which a scammer will pose as a debt-collector. This is often with all the right information about you so that it looks genuine, and will ask for a ‘further payment’ on your debt. Beware of lottery or prize scammers, by which the scammer will tell you that you have won a prize and ask for an upfront tax payment on it. There are many more ways in which scammers can reach you.

Scammers seek to exploit those who are struggling, which makes the cost of living crisis a perfect opportunity for them – and increases our vulnerability. So please stay safe online. There are some keyways in which to do this:

Do not rush into any decisions. Do not provide details for someone you do not know and trust. Check the company you are using before you buy anything.

Pay by debit or with credit card for extra security. Be suspicious – always double check organisations or companies. Do not click or download anything you do not trust. Update your antivirus software. Keep all your online accounts secure.
