Paterson fumes over not getting ‘a clear penalty’ Magpies keen to keep hold of Trippier as Fulham cool on Chalobah
The latest Premier League transfer rumours including news from Newcastle, Chelsea, Fulham and Spurs
Martin Paterson is adamant his side were denied a draw at Pompey after not getting a ‘clearcut’ penalty.
And the Burton boss felt referee Adam Herczeg favouring the Blues over key moments in their 2-1 loss led to their downfall at Fratton Park on Tuesday night.
Paterson believes his side had the League One leaders ‘on the rack’ after John Brayford pulled a goal back with nine minutes left, after a two-goal haul from Kusini Yengi.
Zak Swanson then challenged Bobby Kamwa in the box late on, but Herczeg waved away the Brewers’ appeals – much to the anger of Paterson.
He said: ‘They are top for a reason, they are a very, very good team.
‘They do find holes within the defensive system, though we defended ever so well.
‘My etiquette has been not to discuss officials, but this time it may change.
‘The equilibrium of decisions and actions towards my football club was not the same as it was to theirs, if I’m brutally honest.
‘On the first one, was it a penalty from Deji (Oshilaja) stepping across? It’s not for me to decide, so I respect the decision.
‘But when something happens in the second half which is more clearcut and you don’t get it, after the effort my boys put in, it becomes really, really hard for me to keep my etiquette and not discuss it.
‘We changed our shape and were more aggressive. We started to press high to get back into the game, we get an opportunity one v one and Bobby Kamwa takes on the player – the player hacks him down with a clear contact and it’s a clear penalty.
‘We should come away with a point. It’s unfair to the boys, it’s unfair for my lads.
‘We lost again and that’s on me, but I couldn’t be prouder of my players to come to Portsmouth and have them on the rack late on in the game. I’m going to be careful what I say, but it’s a clearcut penalty.
‘He goes down because he gets kicked and the referee had a great spot (to see the incident).’
Kieran Trippier was linked with a surprise January move to Bayern Munich and although that never materialised, it has led to continued speculation that the England full-back could be looking for a new club come the summer.
Fabrizio Romano says otherwise however, according to an article on Caught Offside.
Apparently, Eddie Howe and the higherups at Newcastle “are still happy with Trippier to stay and be a part of their project”, which is why they in fact rejected Bayern’s bid over the winter. Romano does, admittedly, add “it’s still March so let’s wait”.
The 3AM verdict: This may well be Newcastle’s last chance to cash in on a player whose age isn’t exactly going downwards and some very up-and-down form this season will probably add to the speculation. The question is whether Tino Livramento is ready to be a starter.
Fulham are preparing a contract extension for star centre-half Tosin Adarabioyo and that means that they’re likely to lose interest in Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah.
According to TeamTalk, there is “growing confidence” that Adarabioyo will stay at Fulham, and that will cause them to “cool their interest” in Chalobah, one of the homegrown players Chelsea are keen to sell.
The 3AM verdict: Adarabioyo is a fine player and keeping him would be great news for Fulham. Chelsea will, we suspect, find another buyer for Chalobah, but less competition will push the price down.
Finally, a fresh rumour from Sport Witness
suggests that Tottenham Hotspur recently sent scouts to watch Royale Union SaintGilloise’s Mohamed Amoura in action against Fenerbahçe in the Europa League – but came away raving about a different player instead.
Apparently, Fener midfielder Ismail Yüksek, a Turkish international worth around £6.4m, “convinced” them with his performance and they will be back to watch him again in the Turkish Super Lig.
The 3AM verdict: Yüksek is a holding midfielder, something Spurs are keen to get their hands on this summer, and comes at a great price.
