NMEA0183 Wi-Fi Gateway
Following a successful crowd-funding scheme, the teamSurv NMEA0183 Wi-Fi Gateway will soon be on the market. Designed as an affordable way to connect your boat’s instruments to your smartphone, tablet or laptop, the device has been designed for maximum app compatibility, with support for both types of Internet Protocol (IP) traffic: TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) and UDP (User Datagram Protocol), plus the ability to change IP addresses and port numbers to match your app’s needs.
For a simple installation the device can act as a wireless Access Point (AP) to which you connect your devices, or if you have a router on board the device can be a client to the router. Whan acting as an AP, it also acts as a DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server for easy set-up of a phone or tablet.
The device sends and receives NMEA0183 data, still output by most newer instruments that also use NMEA2000. The NMEA port is fully opto-isolated in both directions, and will tolerate inadvertent connections to the boat’s power supply. The device will run off a 12V or 24V DC supply and tolerate voltages from 7 to 32V and has an internal selfresetting fuse, as well as offering reverse polarity protection. Just point your web browser at the device and you are led through the set-up and configuration. Priced at £99. ■ www.nmeatools.com
