Historic ferry

-

The Teignmouth-Shaldon ferry can be traced back as far as 1296, though it’s probably much older. Black and white ‘gunports’ were added during the Napoleonic War to deter French invaders. Ferries were rowed across the river until the first motorboats were built in 1907. There are two ferries in operation today all year round. Ferry No4 was built in 1947 and Ferry No5 in 1973.
