WHEN TO GO

September is a great time to visit – the weather is still good, but the peak of the French holiday season is over.

GETTING TO…

1 Camping des Alouettes in Cognac-la-forêt From Brissac-quincé, take the D761 to Doué-la-fontaine, then the D960 and D761 to Montreuil-bellay. Follow the D347 to Loudun and Poitiers, then the N147 to Fleuré, Lussac-les-châteaux and Bellac. Take the D675 and the D941 into Saintjunien. Take the D675, D21 and D10 to Cognac-la-forêt. The site is signposted off to the right just before Cognac-la-forêt.

2 Camping de la Bastide in Pineuilh Take the D17 to Séreilhac, then the N21 to Périgueux. Skirt around Périgueux on the D6021. Then take the N21 to Bergerac. The D936 takes you to Sainte-foy-la-grande. Take the D936E6 into the centre, not the ring road. Turn right on rue Richelieu. The site is straight ahead on Alléé du Camping.

3 Camping Eguzon la Garenne in Eguzon Cross the river and take the D708 to meet the A89. Follow this until it meets the A20 near Brive. The A20 continues north through Limoges. Leave the A20 at J20. Proceed into Eguzon on the D36. Go across the square to the D45. The site is on the left on the D45, on the edge of the village.

4 Camping Les Epinettes in Peuplingues Go back to the A20. At Vierzon, take the A71 past Orléans to J12. Pick up the N254, then the N154 to Chartres and Dreux. Take the N12 to Nonancourt, where the N154 begins, again to Evreux and Rouen. Go towards Rouen on the A13 and come off at J22. The D13E and D18 take you to the N28 with a sign for Calais. Cross the river, pick up the A28 and then the A16 to Calais.
