Christmas crackers for classic owners

Tis the season to… get out and about!

-

As 2016 draws to a close, make a New Year’s Resolution to get out in your car as much as possible in 2017. However, you don’t need to wait until the New Year to give your classic some exercise as there are several opportunities over the Christmas period to meet up with likeminded enthusiasts.

You’ve got your pick of gatherings on Boxing Day, the biggest of which is the annual fundraiser in Romsey town centre. Set up by Steve Biddlecombe 14 years ago, the event has raised over £22,000 for charity Steve told PC: ‘It starts at 9am; get there early if you want to bag a slot as more than 600 cars and over 250 motorbikes turn up. The event has got so popular that we have to be strict with the entry policy, which is pre-1976 European cars, bikes and trucks along with pre-1996 American cars, hot rods and bikes.’

If you’re a bit further north give the Lordship Arms near Stevenage a try. Thanks to the support of the Hatfield Heritage Vehicle Society there’s never any shortage of lustworthy classics to gawp at. And the beer’s pretty good, too.

Of the New Year’s Day meets, Brooklands is the biggest with over 1000 classics for its traditional start to the

year. Things kick off at 10am and it’s all over at 4pm – which gives you half a dozen hours to tuck into the barbecue, listen to the live music and pore over row after row of pre-1987 cars, motorcycles and commercial vehicles.

The annual Classic Cars on the Prom meet in Bournemouth is hopefully going ahead, but as we went to press it wasn’t a dead cert because the usual sea front venue won’t be available. Keep an eye on the relevant webpage (see the events diary) to see if it’s happening.
