Revived Gilbern such a pleasure

-

What a pleasure to see a nicely restored Invader in the pages of PC! I had a purple estate that was freshly ‘restored’. The biggest problem with it, was the starter motor, which was called a ‘hot shoe’ starter and was mix of inertia and pre-engaged design. Very rare and from memory only fitted to some Transits, but my Gilbern came with a simple non-standard inertia starter which simply wasn’t up to the job. I did eventually track the correct starter down via a contact with a Scimitar, and that solved it. There was plenty more to do. I replaced the rear chassis members behind the back wheels, and fitted a thermo switch to the electric fan, by bravely drilling a hole into the header tank to take an MGB sensor. But I loved it really and would certainly have another one, although I think my wife would surely disagree. Dave Wellings, by email
