Axle Rebuild Part One

-

1 Grot-off

Clean the grot as much as possible with the diff’ and half-shafts in situ to stop ingress of dirt to the casing.

5 Out with the old

Remove the wheel bearing and replace the high pressure oil seal. Repack the bearing and refit it to the hub.

2 Stripped bare

Disassemble, finish cleaning, convert rust then paint the casing.

3 Polished smooth

Polish away rust and pitting on sealing surface with wet and dry paper and coat in protective rubber grease.

Brakes on 4

Refit backplates and install wheel cylinder and dust cover. This is easier, though not essential, to do while the hubs are removed. You can keep the piston restrained with a rubber band.

6 In with the new

An over-sized socket on the inner race can be used to drive the bearing home.
