CONNECT AND SET UP
Tech Tip A strobe is useful for establishing an initial dynamic timing setting.
Connect to coil 1
Connect the black wire to the original points-to-distributor wire. It goes to the coil terminal marked –, 1 or CB. Connect the red wire to the coil’s +, 15 or SW terminal (the supply from the ignition).
Static timing 2
Fit a test lamp between the coil’s –, 1 or CB terminal and earth. Turn the engine to the correct timing mark and rotate the distributor to adjust. The lamp will light at the instant of sparking.
Dynamic timing 6
Static timing won’t work on all systems. Set it roughly and start the engine. Adjust it until the fastest smooth idle is achieved. Back it off a few degrees if it pinks under load when warm.
