Softwood structure

1971 Thomson Mini Glen Work since last report Structure made sound and a mess made.

-

‘There’s just a little bit of softness around the door,’ the advert said. Eight metres of 2x1in pressure-treated timber, 30 hours in the workshop over a weekend and many grazed knuckles later, it’s finally solid. Huge thanks to Tim and Julie from

craftevan.com who came to help get it into shape.

Studying the original brochures showed that the cracked glassfibre front box was aftermarket, so that was removed… only to reveal a nasty crack in the A-frame. A flourish with a welder and grinder saw the offending area removed and replaced with boxsection through which the wiring could run. It was then time to remove the aluminium cladding. With this off, it was an ideal opportunity to rewire all the lights and replace the piecemeal cabling with new. Now all the rotten timber’s been cut out and the outer cladding is back in place, interior electrics are next on my to-do list.
